The Opportunity

Senior Controls Project Engineer is responsible for the engineering and integration of automation systems for use with Makino Horizontal Machining Centers and equipment provided by Makino to support customer’s request. These options are widely varied in design and function, typically new and unique customer defined, and interface directly with the standard CNC Machine Tool and Makino supplied and supported equipment.

The Senior Controls Project Engineer provides leadership in 3 primary areas of responsibility:

  • Technical Knowledge and Resource
  • Project Management
  • Technical Liaison

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in the control and electrical engineering areas for integration projects and custom Makino machine options that support integration projects.
  • Specify, design, program, and implement automated controls systems for Makino integrated systems.  This includes programming in ladder logic and robot programming languages.
  • Provide support for Makino integrated system projects to ensure all technical issues are resolved in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Support the installation of integrated systems and machine options in the Makino Integration bay and at the customer facilities.
  • Support the integration and implementation of 3rd party developed systems/equipment for use in Makino integrated systems.
  • Make suggestions for changes and improvements to installed integrated systems and machine options as required through field service activities and observations.
  • Provide assistance to sales engineers, regional managers and distributors in answering customer questions and providing demonstrations as directed.
  • Develop, document and maintain system operation, configuration and installation documents following the MAP procedures.
  • Investigate the use of new technologies as they pertain to the control systems for Makino integrated systems and machining centers.
  • Interface with other departments within the Company including Sales, Engineering, Applications Engineering, Order Administration, Manufacturing, and Senior Staff during the execution of projects.  Frequent contacts with customers, vendors, suppliers, and sales representatives.
  • Mentor junior engineers to broaden and sharpen their engineering skills.
Required Skills
  • CNC machine control experience  (5-years minimum).
  • PLC ladder logic programming experience (5-years minimum).
  • Windows operating system experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills including a high level awareness of control systems and how they function (5-years minimum experience in manufacturing control systems).
  • Experience with providing technical leadership.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Project, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of NC programming basics.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • The travel is project based and could be up to 50% at times. 
Required Experience
  • 2-year associate’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent work experience is required.  A 4-year degree in an Engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years experience in the area of controls systems for manufacturing/production equipment and/or support production equipment.
